How to Fly With a Pie This Thanksgiving

TSA officers may want a taste-test, but flying with pies is otherwise allowed.
Flying out of a Michigan airport, with a beloved Michigan pie, I took my chances. The expected jokes about "confiscating" the pie was all the extra security I encountered, and soon, I was happily at 38,000 feet, logging into the in-flight Wi-Fi for the express purpose of sending pie selfies. As one must.

60 veterans fly from TVC to DC to visit war memorials

TRAVERSE CITY — Tom Haywood was an 18-year-old dairyman from Traverse City when he joined the armed forces near the end of World War II.

“I went from milking cows to rounding up German prisoners,” said Haywood, who was stationed as a military policeman in newly liberated Paris.

Now 89, Haywood is grateful to the men who died before he got there, making it safe for him to serve. He planned to thank them when he visited Arlington National Cemetery as part of the sixth Mid-Michigan Honor Flight.

More than 60 World War II, Korean and Vietnam veterans flew from Cherry Capital Airport to Washington D.C. Thursday to visit the war memorials that honor their service and sacrifices. Many used canes, walkers and wheelchairs, others leaned on loved ones.

The trip was arranged and funded by Mid-Michigan Honor Flight, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing veterans with “honor and closure.”  Read the full story (Traverse City Record Eagle)

K-9 Piper at TVC

The Federal Aviation Administration requires the Cherry Capital Airport have a Wildlife Hazard Management Plan in place to mitigate wildlife hazards to aviation. The plan calls for several methods of wildlife mitigation, including lights/sirens, pyrotechnics, traps, habitat modification and dogs. Though rare, dogs are one of the most effective methods of wildlife mitigation at airports.

K-9 Piper is a proactive approach to wildlife management and aviation safety. He is the only Wildlife Control K-9 on staff at an airport in Michigan and, we believe, one of less than ten in the United States.  Read more about Piper...
