Cherry Capital Airport 2016 Record Setting Year For Passenger Traffic!

(Traverse City, MI) - Cherry Capital Airport is pleased to announce that passenger traffic in 2016 is the best year ever. Kevin Klein, Airport Director, released record setting number of passengers traveling by way of TVC Airport during 2016 to the Northwestern Regional Airport Commission during its regular meeting Tuesday, January 24, 2017. TVC’s passenger enplanements surpassed the previous record set in 2005 (217,018) by 9,889 for a total of 226,907. TVC’s passenger deplanements surpassed the previous record set in 2015 (214,680) by 9,759 for a total of 224,439. TVC’s total passengers surpassed the previous record set in 2005 (430,050) by 21,296 for a total of 451,346. These passenger numbers demonstrate that TVC is Michigan’s 4th largest airport in terms of passengers behind Detroit Metro, Gerald R. Ford, and Flint Bishop. Cherry Capital Airport – TVC located in Traverse City, Michigan has operated passenger air service in the Northern Michigan Region since 1938 and continues to grow air service as 2016 was up 5.1% year over year from 2015.

“This is terrific news for Northern Lower Michigan as this growth in passengers confirms the overall economic impact to the region – from Frankfort to Petoskey, east to Gaylord, and north to the Mackinac Straights area", Klein stated. “We also just announced additional air service to Dallas Fort Worth by way of American Airlines. We are excited with the early response to our DFW non-stop flight to TVC. Additionally, we are equally proud to learn of more seats coming from the NYC market this summer season via United’s Newark, Liberty Hub. TVC is positioned to truly be Pure Michigan’s destination airport. We are influencing and servicing an affluent traveler, eager to enjoy the food and fruits of our region – from Michigan agricultural bounty to our wine and craft brews scene, to playing award winning championship golf, to enjoying the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore; it’s truly a destination for everyone to enjoy”, Klein went on to say. TVC currently offers daily passenger air service via American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. Additionally, 53% of total passengers are from outside the state of Michigan, truly making TVC the Pure Michigan Airport of choice.

NMC Aviation In The Ticker!

Women Earning Their Wings At NMC
by Katy Gwizdala

Northwestern Michigan College’s (NMC's) aviation program is reaching new heights in at least one new area – its enrollment of female students has more than doubled its previous two years and is now roughly double the national average.

For the 2016-17 academic year, 11 of 100 enrolled students are female, versus 5-6 in the two years prior. That ten percent figure is almost double the national average of female pilots, which hovers around six percent.

“These numbers, which are proportionally higher than the national average, tells you there’s so much work to do to lead young women to fabulous career fields,” says Marguerite Cotto, NMC’s vice president for lifelong and professional learning.

One likely reason is a recent surge in demand – and pay. The challenging combination of an expensive upfront investment (the expected cost of NMC’s aviation program is approximately $73,000) and relatively low entry-level industry earnings (less than a decade ago, the starting annual salary for a First Officer was $20,000-$25,000) dissuaded many potential students.

But the math has changed dramatically as demand for pilots has increased in recent years. According to Alex Bloye, director of aviation at NMC, starting salaries for a First Officer are now $45-55,000, with signing bonuses for qualified pilot applicants up to $60,000. Bloye cites a “perfect storm of multiple variables” as the reason for the recent demand, including FAA-regulated age requirements leading to a wave of retirements, while the requirements to become a pilot are increasingly restrictive.

“The industry has responded with much higher pay, a higher quality of life, a better schedule… and pilots being recruited their first and second years of college," says Bloye. "It’s a real market for a good, high-paying career."

Bloye says the increase in salary and benefits has likely helped create gender diversity in students of aviation, and a “new generation of people who are more globally aware and conscious than in previous years.”

Another factor? NMC has invested in informing young women of their career options at an early age. In the last 7-10 years, an emphasis has been placed on working with Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS), Traverse Bay Intermediate Public School District (TBAISD), and high schools’ Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) programs to introduce young women to technology and engineering-related fields and demonstrate career paths.

According to Cotto, young women are “self-confident in making their choice. Whether it’s popular or not, it’s what they want to do. When a school tries to be smart, to market, to help promote the image of young women… recruitment shows young women (choosing) unexpected careers.” Cotto says the decision to begin opening doors to women earlier in their development keeps them attentive to what skills are needed, helps them imagine a path that is different and exciting, and makes fields like aviation seem viable, where “parents can really see the opportunities these careers can have.”

Other NMC technology fields of study have also experienced increases in female student populations, including welding, automotive, computer information technology, and engineering technology, many starting with just single-digit outliers and now growing to several that have double-digit female numbers.

TVC Announces New Summer Seasonal Service Beginning June 2 to August 21 - American Airlines TVC - DFW

Daily Service Between DFW and TVC Starts this Summer

(Traverse City, Michigan) – Cherry Capital Airport officials are pleased to announce that American Airlines will offer direct inbound and outbound service between Dallas Ft. Worth and Traverse City, Michigan beginning June 2, 2017. Adding to the roster of flights taking off and landing at Cherry Capital Airport (TVC), is the addition of daily service to DFW – Dallas Ft. Worth this summer. Cherry Capital Airport officials and American Airlines are working together to make it easier for customers traveling from the Southwest region of the United States to the Traverse City community.

“This new daily direct, dual class flight continues to show the commitment on behalf of American Airlines in growing our service. It is ever so clear that our job as a community is to promote, use, and support the service,” stated Kevin Klein, Airport Director.

The summer service from DFW to TVC and TVC to DFW represents approximately 12,000 additional seats in the market. Beginning June 2nd, the direct flight will depart DFW at 10:50 a.m. and arrives into TVC at 2:40 p.m., while the aircraft will return to DFW from TVC each day at 3:35 p.m. and arrives into DFW at 5:30 p.m. Envoy will operate service between DFW and TVC with an ERJ-175 aircraft with Wi-Fi.

American Airlines also offers customers convenient direct service to TVC from its hub in Chicago (ORD), getting visitors to northern Michigan with just one-stop from anywhere in the World. On the heels of many accolades and features, including being home to a nationally acclaimed collection of golf courses designed by many of the game’s greats, northern Michigan is the perfect destination for Texans and those living in hot weather destinations to enjoy long days and cool temperatures on the links, all season long. Additionally, the region was included in USA Today’s Top 10 National Parks – placing Northern Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Dunes in Leelanau County in the top ten. Michigan’s Lower Peninsula—mainly a five-county area surrounding Traverse City—is attracting a surge in Texas tourists and second-home buyers, according to regional officials. It’s not surprising, since the region’s dune-edged shorelines, growing wineries, small towns and picturesque cherry orchards can often be reached via flight less than three hours from American Airlines headquarters in Dallas Ft. Worth. In addition to the summer Festival Season including the National Cherry Festival, Great Lakes Equestrian Festival, TC Film Festival, and the National Writers Series, the region is now known for its Craft Beer, Wine and culinary prowess.
“We at TVC continue to fulfill a true Northern Michigan experience; one that is clearly Pure Michigan. TVC is Total Value and Convenient.

We are eager to continue to work with our northern Michigan partners including Traverse City Tourism, our Chamber of Commerce, and the Gaylord Golf Mecca, and airlines alike to attract additional services. This opportunity was supported through the Small Community Air Service Development Program by the USDOT. This grant is valued at $750,000 from the USDOT and $305,000 from our local community partners,” Klein stated.
