Travel Tips For The Holidays

FAA Wants You To Pack Safely This Holiday Season

Millions of travelers will take to the skies during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) wants to help you make it to your destination safely. You can help with that by paying close attention to what’s in your bag.

Some common toiletries that passengers pack could be hazardous. Check your bags for the following items: aerosol cans that may contain hair spray, deodorant, tanning spray or animal repellant, nail polish, artist paints and glues.

Wondering what to do with those e-cigarettes? Passengers should know that e-cigarettes, vaping devices, and spare lithium batteries are not authorized to be packed in checked luggage. Spare lithium batteries – the kind that are found in personal electronic devices and back-up charging devices – can only travel in carry-on baggage.

Electronic devices powered by lithium batteries can catch fire if they are damaged or have exposed electrical terminals. If devices start to smoke or catch fire, they are much easier to extinguish if they are in the cabin area rather than the cargo hold. The FAA recommends that passengers keep cell phones and other devices nearby in the cabin to quickly access them if necessary.

Spare lithium batteries must be placed in carry-on baggage and protected from damage or short-circuiting. Batteries should be packed so that they are not touching or bumping something that could potentially cause them to spark.  If batteries are not sealed in manufacturer packaging, the battery terminals should be protected by covering them with tape and placing them in separate bags to prevent short circuits.

For more detailed information about materials that should not fly, check out our Pack Safe: When in Doubt, Leave it Out video, the FAA's PackSafe website, and the FAA’s Hazardous Materials Safety website.

To be on the safe side, when in doubt, just leave it out!

American Airlines Announces CLT Charlotte North Carolina Summer 2019

Saturday Service Between CLT Charlotte, North Carolina and TVC Will Begin Summer 2019

(Traverse City, Michigan) – Cherry Capital Airport officials are pleased to announce that American Airlines will offer direct inbound and outbound service between Charlotte, North Carolina and Traverse City, Michigan beginning June 8, 2019.  Adding to the roster of flights taking off and landing at Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) is the addition of Saturdayservice to Charlotte, North Carolina (CLT) this next summer. Cherry Capital Airport officials and American Airlines are working together to make it easier for customers traveling from the Southeast region of the United States to the Traverse City community.

“This new daily direct, dual class flight continues to show the commitment on behalf of American Airlines in growing our service. It is ever so clear that our job as a community is to promote, use, and support the service,” stated Kevin Klein, Airport Director.

The summer service from CLT to TVC and TVC to CLT represents approximately additional 1,700 seats in the market.  Beginning June 8th, the Saturday direct flight will depart CLT at 11:30 a.m. and arrives into TVC at 1:50 p.m., while the aircraft will return to CLT from TVC each Saturday at 2:25 p.m. and arrives into CLT at 4:45 p.m. American will operate service between CLT and TVC with an CRJ-700.

American Airlines also offers customers convenient directservice to TVC from Dallas/Ft. Worth and New York’s LaGuardia, in addition to its hub in Chicago (ORD), getting visitors to northern Michigan with just one-stop from anywhere in the World.

On the heels of many accolades and features, including being home to a nationally acclaimed Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake Shore, a collection of golf courses designed by many of the game’s greats including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Robert Trent Jones Sr.northern Michigan is the perfect destination for those inbound and who live in hot weather destinations to enjoy fresh water beaches, and long days and cool temperatures on the links, all season long.

Michigan’s Lower Peninsula—mainly a five-county area surrounding Traverse City—is attracting a surge in tourists and second-home buyers from every corner of the United States, according toregional officials. It’s not surprising, since the region’s dune-edged shorelines, growing wineries, small towns and picturesque cherry orchards can often be reached via flight just over two hours from American Airlines hub in Charlotte, North Carolina . In addition to the summer Festival and events season including the Iron Man, National Cherry Festival, Great Lakes Equestrian Festival, TC Film Festival, and the National Writers Series, the regionis now known for its Distilleries, Craft Beer, Wine and Culinary prowess.

Traverse City Chamber Member Spotlight

Member Spotlight: Soaring Numbers at TVC by Bill O’Brian

The skies have never been friendlier over the Grand Traverse region. Working with local partners including the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce, Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) and Executive Director Kevin Klein (pictured) are preparing to roll out the airport’s best summer season yet with an unprecedented number of travel options to high-profile airline hubs across the U.S. including Detroit, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, New York City and beyond.

Learn more about Cherry Capital’s growing passenger counts, its summer flight schedule, its major economic impact on the Traverse City area and more in this week’s Member Spotlight.

Buoyed by surging business travel and Traverse City’s growing reputation as a national destination, Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) is riding a wave of growth that started more than five years ago and shows no signs of slowing down.

In 2017 almost 477,000 travelers utilized the airport – its best year ever – and airport traffic continues to trend upward this year. TVC Executive Director Kevin Klein said there are numerous factors driving the airport’s success – not the least of which is the growing business travel both in to and out of the Grand Traverse region.

“Business travel is back,” Klein said. “People want to come in and do business with our companies.”

Klein said the national and even international clientele for local companies like Hagerty and Britten is generating extensive business travel at the airport. Area manufacturers are also generating passenger traffic, and the airlines that service the region are also building air service around specific activities including the event schedule at the Interlochen Center for the Arts and the Center for Automotive Research conference held each summer at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa.

“The airlines have a good feel for our community,” Klein said. “They are very tuned in to what’s happening up here.”

The 2018 summer season will bring an unprecedented level of flight service to Northwest Michigan. The summer schedule which begins gearing up after Memorial Day includes Delta Air Lines flights to Detroit (daily), Minneapolis/St. Paul, Atlanta and New York. United Airlines will offer daily flights to Chicago along with regular trips to Newark, NJ and Denver. American Airlines will have daily flights to Chicago, along with service to the Dallas/Fort Worth and New York City markets.

While recreation travel represents a major portion of the summer business, Klein said business travelers are also well-served by the schedule as it allows locals to catch early-morning flights from Traverse City and connect with major airline hubs by mid-morning. Business travelers can often reach their destinations within a half-day, he said. Those service schedules are the result of extensive research on local travel patterns done by the airport and airlines back in 2013-14.

“That’s something that’s important to the business traveler,” Klein said. “We try to get a lot of information on where our travelers are going.”

Keeping up with those travel trends requires extensive work and research. Klein said he meets with airline representatives three to four times a year to review travel data and talk about how to improve service.

“We fine-tune things,” he said. “We’re always putting our business forward (to the airlines) to have them in our community…we’re always trying to put our best foot forward.”

The increased activity at Cherry Capital Airport is also generating major economic activity for the entire Grand Traverse region. A study last year from the Michigan Department of Transportation estimated the airport’s annual economic impact on the area at just under $1 billion – ranking it the third-highest airport in Michigan in terms of economic generation. Only the airports in Detroit and Grand Rapids were higher.

Klein is optimistic that those numbers will only continue to grow.

“I think we’re starting to attract more opportunities to our marketplace than ever before,” he said. “We’re the bright spot of Michigan.”Buoyed by surging business travel and Traverse City’s growing reputation as a national destination, Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) is riding a wave of growth that started more than five years ago and shows no signs of slowing down.
